Slabs, footings, driveways and patios are a large share of Tucson demolition work, whether alongside a house teardown or on commercial and industrial sites. Concrete removal looks simple, but the ground, the reinforcement and the access can change how long it takes and what it costs.

Caliche and local soils

Much of the Tucson area has caliche, a hard, cemented calcium-carbonate layer in the soil. Slabs often sit on or near it, which can make the subgrade tough to excavate or regrade after the concrete is out. If you plan to build or landscape afterward, mention it so equipment and scope can be planned.

Factors that shape a slab removal job

  • Thickness and reinforcement: wire mesh, rebar and post-tension cables are handled differently.
  • Equipment access, including side yards, block walls and alleys.
  • Buried utilities, which should be located through Arizona 811 before breaking.
  • Contamination such as oil staining, which can limit recycling options.
  • Haul distance and the receiving facility's requirements.

Post-tension slabs

Some slabs contain tensioned cables that can be dangerous if cut or broken improperly. If your plans or inspection suggest post-tensioning, tell your contractor before work starts so the right method is used.

Questions to ask a contractor

  • Where does the concrete go, and can you document recycling or disposal?
  • How will rebar and other metals be separated?
  • Who arranges locates and any required permits?
  • What condition will the ground be left in?
